Corn Maze and Halloween Party!

We have had a crazy week at school! Family Harvest night turned out really great. It was fun to see some of the fun costumes. However, I didn't get any pictures! The Corn Maze on Wednesday was fun. The kid's got a little restless on the hour long bus ride, I thought for sure some might rest the way home but not a chance... I am glad we had the chance to go on this field trip. We had a wonderful mother get us a grant for bus costs for the entire first grade. Thank you Symone! The kid's got to pick out a gourd (the pumpkins had been frozen), learn about water (perfect... it's first grade core curriculum), walk through the maze, and play! We had many mother helpers and we love them so!

Our Halloween party was awesome! Thanks to Mandy, Jennifer, Bobby, and Tonya! The kids had a blast! Hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween!

Listen To Your MUMMY...

For Red Ribbon Week our PTA had a door decorating contest. We didn't win, but I honestly think our door was the cutest one for sure!!!

Smokey Bear!

Only you can prevent fires!!! Smokey Bear came to visit our class during fire prevention week. Smokey's friends taught us the difference between "good" fires and "bad" fires. The kids thought it was exciting to see him and were really surprised. I hadn't told them he was coming!

This is going to be yet another crazy, busy week. Tuesday night is the fall carnival here at the school. Come have a fun family night. Wednesday we will be going on a field trip to the Corn Maze and of course on Friday we will have our class Halloween party! Of course I will post pictures of these events later...

I am not going to post names of our 100% spellers this week. EVERYONE in our class got at least a 90% on our spelling test this week (words with short u)!!! I am so proud of these kiddos! They are working hard and they all deserve a hug!

Super Spellers!

School is flying by... 28 days of first grade today! I am so proud of the kids and I feel I am really beginning to really know each one of them individually! We have a busy week to look forward to next week. It will be Red Ribbon Week. It is also Fire Prevention week and we have a special guest coming to visit our classroom on Monday! (stay tuned):)

Friday's are early out days, but are very important and busy. We do weekly assessments on Fridays and we also get to do math centers. The kids really look forward to math centers each week. We do literacy centers Mon.- Thurs. and I really wanted to fit a time in for the kids to get their hands on experiences with manipulatives and fun math activities. I am glad they enjoy them so much and to tell you the truth, I look forward to math centers each week also. I really believe I would have loved math much more as a child had I gotten to do more "hands on" discovery. Feel free to come visit our class anytime...

Literacy Centers

We started literacy centers this week. We have been learning the routines and procedures to each center and are now trying them all at the same time with rotations. Each center is literacy based, focusing on helping each child become "better readers and writers". (If you ask your child what centers are helping us learn they should tell you that.)
The centers are designed for the students to be able to do independent work while I am leading guided reading with small groups at different reading levels. Each day Monday- Thursday we spend 1 hour at centers. We rotate 4 centers @ 15 min. each with recess break after the first two to help us split it up a bit.
Center time is our quietest time of the day, helping us each focus on each task at hand. This week we had our mother helpers start. We are lucky enough to have a mother helping in our class every day of the week! We also have Mrs. Peacock our reading tutor every other day helping in our classroom with center groups.
While practicing this week, I took these pictures of the students at a few of our different centers we were practicing on this particular day.

Another center we have is spelling center. I'm not sure if it has been the complete reason... but we have had some awesome spelling happening here! Good job practicing at home! This week 100% spellers are: (short o words)

*Skyler
*Levi

Wow! I really hope the list is always this long. However, I may not be able to afford that many treats each week! :) Way to go!
